The Family

Serrano Mira is the surname that results from the union of two families that have been producing wine in the Alentejo for 13 generations. Serrano Mira is also the name of the wine group led by Luis Serrano Mira, which includes Herdade das Servas in the Alentejo and Casa da Tapada in the Vinho Verde region.

Luis Serrano Mira was born into a family of producers with strong ties to rural property and wine. He grew up observing their practices and listening with pride and attention to the teachings that his great-grandparents, grandparents and parents passed on to him. From an early age, he became aware that nothing can be achieved without hard work and a spirit of sacrifice. He believes that dedication and commitment are key factors in the quality and consistency of a project, which is maximized when there is a symbiosis between inherited learning and innovations introduced in the present. He believes that this will be the mark of his time and the legacy he is leaving to future generations.

The Serrano Mira family’s connection to this universe dates back to 1667, a date attested to by two clay pots that have been passed down from generation to generation. An inheritance that, when it came into the hands of Luis Serrano Mira, motivated him to carry out an exhaustive historical survey, portrayed and documented in the book “A história da vinha e do vinho no Alentejo – Legado de uma família a produzir desde 1667” (The history of vines and wine in the Alentejo – Legacy of a family producing since 1667). These two winemaking containers have eight-pointed stars drawn on them, now used in the Serrano Mira logo, which symbolize goodness, regeneration, abundance and protection of the harvest, but also truth and hope.

Herdade Das Servas

In the Alentejo and under the Herdade das Servas label, Serrano Mira looks after a wine estate of around 350 hectares, divided into eight vineyards that are distinct from each other but complement each other in their identity: Azinhal, Cardeira Nova, Cardeira Velha, Clérigo, Judia, Louseira, Pêro Lobo and Servas. Located in the municipalities of Estremoz and Borba, they are set at an average altitude of 300 meters, between the Serra d’Ossa and the Serra de São Mamede.

The connection between the vineyards and the wine is led by the Enologist Renato Neves, in close collaboration with Luis Serrano Mira. Herdade das Servas is equipped with state-of-the-art reception, vinification, ageing and aging technology, producing wines that combine tradition and modernity. Whites, rosés and reds are currently on the market under the Monte das Servas and Herdade das Servas brands.

Enotourism has always been a fundamental part of this project, with a view to welcoming anyone who wants to learn about the process of creating our wines. There are several tastings available, complemented by snacks or more demanding wine pairings, at the Legacy Winery Restaurant table. Led by chef Emanuel Rodriguez, it offers contemporary cuisine inspired by the traditions of Alentejo gastronomy: soulful, original and full of flavor.

The 1940s were a milestone for the family. Luís Serrano Mira’s paternal grandfather created one of the first private companies dedicated to wine production in the Alentejo, making his debut as a producer-bottler. In 1955, his maternal great-grandfather was one of the founding members and the first president of a cooperative winery in the Alentejo. In order to perpetuate the family’s history and connection to the world of wine, but to design and build a new path, the Serrano Mira brothers started Herdade das Servas in Estremoz in 1998.
